knitting and more

March 5th, 2010 by admin

One of the oldest materials for clothes is wool. Very shortly after our ancestors, the cave men, learned that you can carry half a dead furry animal or tons of fur to keep warm, they invented spinning wool. And what a congenial material wool is! It has lots of characteristics that even high tec fibres do not reach – isn’t that cool.

If you are a sheep fan and like wool, you most probably will want to work with it. The first thing you could think about is spinning wool. I found a nice interesting site about that on a german blog: Wolle spinnen

Next thing is of course dyeing wool yourself. This is something many people don’t dare…although it is pretty easy and can be done in any household with plant and a few chemicals. Have a look over here (sorry, the video is only in german):Wolle selbst färben

Last but not least you will want to knit with your wool, and let’s be honest, although it can be really fun to do all the things like spinning and dyeing yourself, most of the time you will just buy a good ball of wool in a shop.

Read here about knitting on this german blog: Socken Stricken im Fair Isle Stil

The wool shown on that page has proved to go nicely when knitting and is easy to wash. Now get your knitting needles or your spinning wheel and have some fun with wool!

Tips You Can Use to Buy the Right Book Holder for You

March 5th, 2010 by admin

Properly selected, a book holder can reduce and sometimes even eliminate hand, wrist, arm and neck fatigue for book lovers, keep the book its holding from harm, and protect the reader’s privacyfrom prying eyes. While book holders may be a necessity for readers with certain physical challenges, most book lovers don’t initially realize the convenience of a book holder. However, virtually every book reader quickly discover they prefer reading with one once they’ve actually used a well crafted design.

Some book holder designs also serve as a stand to support and position a book for convenient reading. Some designs consist of simple wire creations that clip onto pages of the book to hold it open, while others form stands for use on flat surfaces and can be folded flat for easy storage or transport from home to office to school or wherever. Other designs include floor stands that can be easily moved from a favorite easy chair to bedside to beside. Other designs feature spring steel inside vinyl covers that wrap around a book to hold it open for reading and snap closed for protection during travel.

Other book holder designs can do double duty as magazine holders, copy holders, newspaper holders, etc, thus extending the number of benefits its owner enjoys. There are book holders designed to float in a pool or tub, and there are book holders that will hold your book attached to your computer or laptop screen. And there are designs to securely clamp to a table, counter top or desk to support a book up to 5 pounds in weight while preserving valuable work space. These are particularly great for cook books, repair manuals, user guides, instruction or installation manuals and other books you need to keep handy when working, but where space is at a premium.

By buying the right book holder(s), a book lover’s enjoyment can be increased significantly.

Making Your Basement Waterproof

March 5th, 2010 by admin

A quality sump pump in your basement is an important investment in flood prone areas. But your sump pump should only be relied on when other preventived measures do not work. If you’re building an exercise or weight room in your basement, consider doing things in addition to installing a sump pump.

For dry Chicago basements, we are the specialists. We are Reliable Basement Services and we are proud to be a full service Chicagoland basement flood repair, basement waterproofing, and Aurora IL basement remodeling company specializing in basement waterproofing. We do what it takes to give you a comfortable, dry basement. For more information visit our website at ReliableBasement.com or call us at 630 777-0539.

The first step in protecting your basement from water damage is in the grading of the home site. The soil must slope away from the basement walls at least six inches in the first 100 feet. A less obvious basement water problem comes from the roof – your gutters and downspouts.

An average 2000 square foot roof produces close to 1200 gallons of water with for every inch of rain. Clogged gutters or downspouts without sufficient tiling to drain water away from the foundation can cause severe dampness of basement walls. To compensate for this you need adequate tile drainage around your foundation.

One solution to poor grading or roof drainage problems is a dry well. This technique is a lot less work and much less expensive than regrading your entire lot.

Another method of handling poor drainage is a French drain. A traditional French drain is a simple gravel and sand filled trench that leads water away from low-lying areas.

The grading of the trench is of primary importance because that is what takes the water away from the house. It should be filled with gravel up to about 5 or 6 inches from the surface, then a few inches of sand and covered with topsoil or a layer of sod. A French drain can be even more effective if you place a perforated drain pipe in the trench.

If water is getting into the interior some distance from the sump pump you can create an interior drain to lead the water from the lead to the pump. This method involves breaking up the floor along the base of the basement walls, digging a trench, and installing drain tiles to carry the water to a sump pump or discharge point. Once the drainage system is working cover it with gravel and replace the floor above it.

Cracks in your foundation or basement walls can let water in too. When this happens you should contact a basement waterproofing company to repair the cracks with a waterproof caulking material. Then seal the wall with additional waterproofing coatings.

A Few Solid Reasons To Use Hand Massagers

March 4th, 2010 by admin

Massage can be very helpful to people who complain of pain in their muscles and joints, yet professional massage therapy gets expensive. A lot of the same benefits are available to you by purchasing electronic massagers. These devices have improved dramatically over the years, and they can actually give you a top notch professional massage experience right at home.

Muscle pain is easily the number one most common complaints that people see their doctors for. Half the time there is nothing abnormal about these feelings. Aches and pains just can’t be avoided. But if you’re hurting, it can significantly interfere with your enjoyment of your life.

Massage therapy is one of the most simple and direct remedies for these symptoms. It can reduce the pain and make it easier to move about normally. Most people also find it to be profoundly calming and rejuvenating. Naturally, it goes without saying to be sure to talk to your doctor right from the beginning to make sure that your symptoms are not the result of any medical problems. After that, as soon as you know for sure that there are no health problems, a good rub down may be very helpful to you.

The problem is that professional massage therapists costs more than a lot of people can afford, especially in a down economy. If you could benefit from regular massage therapy, you’ll probably really notice the expense. On the other hand, a lot of people find that home massage equipment is almost as good. If you asked me for an example, my first reaction would be: Ultra Relaxation Home Massager Adjustable Arm Waterproof

Handheld massage therapy equipment range from cheap electric massagers you can operate by hand that might be battery operated, to more professional-grade units that focus on one or two problem areas. You may find, for example, that you can get specific neck massaging devices, massagers that only focus on the feet and calves, or special pads for back massage. Although certain people may not feel comfortable with the upfront cost of high end home massagers, the money you save on trips to the massage therapist can make these machines more than pay for themselves. What I’m thinking about specifically is here: OneTouch Chi Swing Exercise Machine with Infrared Foot

The ideal way for you to know if a particular type of massager might do the trick is to test it on your own body. Many sellers provide access to working machines which you can test out on your own variety of muscle tension to find out if the type of massage a given machine provides is effective for your needs. If you can’t get access to try them out, then try to scour the internet review sites to see whether a given massager works for other people like you, and surmise in that way whether a given massager might work out well for you.
